Gunman charged over Melbourne assaults

A man has been charged over a spate of alleged assaults and robberies at gunpoint across Melbourne.

The 38-year-old man was arrested on Sunday over the incidents in Collingwood, Abbotsford and Fitzroy the same weekend.

He's been charged with offences including burglary, illegal firearm possession and assault with a weapon.

The man will remain in custody before appearing at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on September 30.

Meanwhile, friends of the alleged victims have started a fundraising campaign to cover the cost of the goods stolen.

A Facebook campaign for "West Papuan Activists robbed at gunpoint in Collingwood" has raised more than $14,000.

"Their phones, cameras, laptops, music equipment and cash were all stolen," the campaign promoter says.

"Public housing residents were also assaulted by the gunman at Collingwood estate."

One of the alleged victims said a gunman came to their house and threatened to shoot them before taking their belongings.
