Fire and Rescue NSW 'open week' launched

If you've ever wanted to go on a virtual tour of a fire station and learn what goes on behind the scenes, now is your chance.

Hundreds of NSW fire stations will be opened online to the public from Saturday to Friday for Fire and Rescue NSW's open week.

Community members will be able to tune into live demonstrations, Q&A sessions with firefighters, and learn more about how emergency service workers protect people from fire, floods, natural disasters and pandemics.

Emergency Services David Elliott on Friday said it was important to prepare homes for winter especially given families were spending more time at home under COVID-19 restrictions.

Winter usually sees an increase in residential house fire-related fatalities, Acting Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell said.

He urged residents to take care when using heaters, fireplaces and electric blankets.

"If we all do our bit to minimise the risks in our homes, we can all stay safer together," Mr Fewtrell said in a statement.
