South Australians of the Year to be named

A long-time advocate for victims of crime and terrorism is among the four finalists vying to be named South Australia's Australian of the Year for 2020.

Michael O'Connell worked for many years as the state's Victims' Rights Commissioner, supporting victims and their families through times of crisis.

He's described his nomination as an honour and says it affords him another opportunity to pay tribute to those who have endured pain and anguish in the pursuit of justice.

Also vying for the SA award are wellbeing advocate and filmmaker Gabrielle Kelly, literacy advocate Sandra Marshall and eye surgeon James Muecke.

The South Australian winner will be named at a ceremony at Adelaide Oval on Wednesday and will become the state's nominee in the national awards.

In other categories, 90-year-old Legacy volunteer Sylvia McMillan is a finalist for the Senior South Australian of the Year while cystic fibrosis sufferer and advocate Emmah Evans is among the four finalists vying to be named the SA Local Hero.
