What is the latest with the NSW bushfires?

A major bushfire has resulted in the loss of up to 30 homes in northern NSW.

Here is the latest on what we know:

WHERE ARE THE MAJOR FIRES?

There are more than 30 bushfires across the state. Two major blazes at Drake near Tenterfield and at Busbys Flat near Rappville have joined to form a massive fire, the RFS says.

That out-of-control blaze has burned more than 100,000 hectares.

WHAT'S THE DAMAGE?

Up to 30 properties are thought to have been destroyed in the fire including the Rappville town hall and a mill, according to locals.

Some residents were treated for minor burns and breathing difficulties and an 83-year-old man who lost his home had to be rescued from a shed.

NSW Police say a number of people are unaccounted for. They are urging all locals to register their location at register.redcross.org.au.

More than 100 power poles that have been burned and trees are down across roads.

WHAT RESOURCES HAVE BEEN DEPLOYED?

Over 500 firefighters have been deployed across the state - with 121 at Busby's Flat and 71 at Drake.

Firefighters are being supported by aircraft and heavy machinery such as bulldozers to cut containment lines.

Reinforcements are coming from interstate to help over the coming days.

WHAT WARNINGS HAVE BEEN ISSUED?

An emergency warning was issued on Tuesday night but by Wednesday the blaze at Busby's Flat was downgraded to "watch and act" while the Drake fire was at the lower "advice" level.

WHAT IS THE FORECAST?

The RFS says more favourable conditions - including lower temperatures and lighter winds - are forecast for Thursday and Friday.

Some coastal rain is expected by the end of the week.
