Two dead, one critical in Melbourne crash

Two young people are dead and another is fighting for life after a fiery two-car crash in Melbourne's southeast.

A green Mazda with a 19-year-old man still on his P-plates behind the wheel was believed to be driving erratically before the crash on Ferntree Gully Road at Oakleigh East about 8pm on Sunday, police say.

It collided with a Nissan Skyline which burst into flames, killing the 21-year-old driver as well as a 19-year-old woman who was a back seat passenger in the Mazda.

"This was completely avoidable," Major Collision Investigation Unit Inspector Stuart McGregor told reporters.

"These are kids, children, driving lethal weapons on our roads - we're (now) going to have to talk to mum and dad.

"We've got two people that are dead, that didn't have to happen, and a person who's looking at a long time in jail."

Police are yet to formally interview the Mazda driver, who is still in Royal Melbourne Hospital where he was taken alongside an 18-year-old front seat passenger.

Another of his passengers, an 18-year-old man from Box Hill is fighting for life and has undergone surgery.

Insp. McGregor said the road was a good, safe road and factors such as speed and alcohol consumption would be investigated.

Victoria's road toll now stands at 209, compared to 152 this time last year.

Insp. McGregor implored for drivers to take care and for families to discuss the importance of safe driving.

"We have to stop this carnage on our roads," he said.
