Man dead after Sydney factory accident
Workplace deaths and injuries are sadly no longer a surprise in NSW, according to a furious union official angry at a spate of deadly incidents in the past fortnight.
A 30-year-old man died on Wednesday morning after his head became trapped in a machine at a western Sydney pallet factory.
The incident occurred about 5.30am at the facility on Forrester Road in St Marys. Paramedics arrived to treat the worker but he died at the site.
NSW Ambulance also responded to two other workplace accidents in Sydney on Wednesday.
A man was taken to hospital after reportedly being hit in the head by falling pipes in Pyrmont and another man was hospitalised after tumbling eight metres from scaffolding in Point Piper.
CFMEU state secretary Darren Greenfield says safety "means nothing" to a lot of builders and developers and he's come to expect phone calls about workplace deaths.
"People are just happy to cut corners to save a dollar or to get a project finished quicker and this is the outcome of that," Mr Greenfield told AAP
"Unfortunately, these incidents just keep happening and they're happening more and more often so they're not a surprise to us at all."
Three other workers have died in Sydney in the past three weeks.
A 40-year-old man died on September 7 when he was sucked into a woodchipper in Lindfield; a 49-year-old man died after falling from a ladder at a Pendle Hill worksite on August 28; and a 38-year-old man died at a Jordan Springs construction site after falling five floors down a ventilation shaft on August 21.
Mr Greenfield says workers should remember it's easier to have a conversation with a boss about safety than it is for loved ones to get a call with terrible news.
"Construction workers in this state need to start standing up and it's been very hard for them because ... to protect their jobs they've kept their mouths shut."
Safework NSW said in a statement they would investigate the St Marys incident while NSW Police said a brief would be prepared for the coroner.
