Fresh measles case on NZ-Melbourne flight
A woman from Melbourne has been hospitalised with measles after travelling to New Zealand, which is experiencing an outbreak of the infectious disease.
A public alert was issued on Wednesday, with the health department confirming the woman, aged in her 40s, was not contagious on the Air New Zealand flight from Auckland to Melbourne on August 30.
But she may have been infectious when she visited shops and cafes in Brighton, Malvern, Port Melbourne and St Kilda between then and September 5.
So far this year there have been 35 confirmed cases of measles in Victoria.
In almost all cases people were not fully immunised and travelled overseas or were in contact with overseas travellers.
Victoria's chief health officer Brett Sutton said there had been a number of measles outbreaks in America, Asia, Europe and New Zealand.
"People who are planning overseas travel should ensure they have received vaccinations appropriate to travel, including an MMR vaccine if they do not have a history of two previous MMR vaccinations," Dr Sutton said.
