Worker jumps in ocean during SA jetty fire

A worker was forced to jump into the ocean after a jetty on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula caught alight on Wednesday afternoon.

About 12.45pm fire crews were called to the Whyalla jetty, where 75 metres of the 150-metre long, plastic-coated structure had gone up in flames.

A Metropolitan Fire Service spokesperson said the fire was caused by sparks from cutting equipment coming into contact with combustible material.

Several workers were present, with one receiving treatment from paramedics after being forced to jump into the water to escape the blaze.

It took four crews about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control, and the damage bill is still being investigated.
