Worker falls 10m at Canberra building site

A young man appears to have escaped life-threatening injuries after falling more than 10 metres from a building at a Canberra construction site.

The scaffolder, believed to be aged about 20, was rushed to hospital with critical injuries on Friday morning.

However, it is understood the worker regained consciousness in the ambulance and was talking to paramedics.

His ankle and pelvis are believed to have been broken. Hospital staff are also scanning for internal and head injuries.

The man was stripping formwork and scaffolding from one edge of the multi-use building before falling over a guard rail and plummeting to the ground.

ACT Work Safety Commissioner Greg James said he was wearing all the appropriate safety equipment and personal protective gear.

Workers have downed tools at the Dickson site while inspectors speak to several witnesses.

"We're talking to them to see if we can work out whether he has either leant on the rail or whether a piece of equipment they've been handling has given him a bit of a push or a nudge," Mr James told AAP.

He used the incident to drive home the fundamentals of construction site safety.

"WorkSafe encourages all employers to make sure that safety is their number one priority, and for all workers to follow all safety procedures and take care on sites."
