A man is in a critical condition in hospital after an alleged assault in NSW's central west, prompting the arrest of another man.

The 34-year-old was allegedly punched on Saturday evening outside a licensed premise in Cobar before falling backwards, hitting his head on the footpath and falling unconscious.

He was taken to Cobar Hospital with severe head injuries and later transferred to Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
