Man charged over catch-me-if-you-can chase

A man has used a ute, a motorbike and a stolen car in a catch-me-if-you-can chase on the Gold Coast.

The drama began about 6am on Wednesday when the man allegedly stole a motorbike from Surfers Paradise and loaded it onto the back of a hired ute.

He then drove north to Biggera Waters where police say he tried to steal a jet ski, but things went horribly wrong when he got the ute wedged between two concrete pylons.

Thinking on his feet, it's alleged he unloaded the motorbike and fled on that, leaving a gun and ammunition behind in the ute.

A few hours later officers on a routine patrol spotted the man strolling along the side of a road at Pimpama. But that wasn't the end of the drama.

Police say he ran into a nearby property and stole another vehicle, sparking a chase that involved the police helicopter.

He was tracked to nearby Helensvale, where officers used tyre spikes to stop the car and he was arrested at the scene.

A 31-year-old man is due to front the Southport Magistrates Court on Thursday on charges including vehicle theft, unlawful and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, evading police, and unlawful possession of a weapon.

He's also facing drug charges.
