Vic contractors to get long service leave

Contract workers in Victoria will be entitled to long service leave from next week, even as they move between jobs.

Cleaning, community services and security businesses will have to pay a levy into the state government's new portable long service scheme, to be used to cover workers' leave.

They can accrue long service leave even as they move between jobs, but must remain in the same industry for seven years to be eligible.

"If you work in the same place for seven years, you should get long service benefits - it's just that simple," government MP Steve Dimopoulos said.

The scheme comes into effect from Monday and businesses in the cleaning, community services and security industries have until September 30 to register.

From October, they must submit quarterly returns telling the new Portable Long Service Authority the hours worked and pay received for employees. The levy will be based on workers' pay rate.
