Labor pledges $3.5b to ease Vic traffic

Federal Labor has pledged to inject $3.5 billion to ease congestion across suburban Melbourne, including almost $2 billion for the North East Link project.

A Shorten Labor government would provide $1.75 billion towards the North East Link, which will complete the ring road between the east and west and connect the growing north and south-eastern suburbs.

The opposition on Thursday said it would also put $250 million towards the Victoria's first fully separated high-speed busway, along a widened Eastern Freeway from Doncaster to the city.

Buses will be able to travel at up to 100kmh, cutting commute times by up to a third.

A further $1.5 billion would be spent on upgrading key arterial roads throughout the city.
