Woman stable after Vic pet deer attack

Nearly two weeks after being attacked by her family's pet deer in northeast Victoria, a woman has started to show signs of recovery.

The stag turned on Mandi McDonald when she and her son rushed to help her husband Paul as he was attacked in the animal's enclosure at their home near Wangaratta on April 17.

Mr McDonald died at the scene and his wife was flown in a critical condition to Melbourne's Alfred Hospital, where she remains.

A spokeswoman for the Alfred told AAP on Tuesday that Mrs McDonald's condition had improved to serious but stable condition over the past day.

At the time of the deer attack, police said the McDonalds had kept the animal - a cross between a red deer and an elk - as a pet for about two years.

It was shot dead by officers to allow paramedics to treat the couple.
