Man critical after car crash at bus stop

A man in his 70s is in a critical condition after being thrown four metres when he was hit by a car while waiting at a bus stop in northwestern Sydney.

Emergency services were called to The Ponds at 2.28pm on Friday and on arrival found a 71-year-old man unconscious.

It is believed the man was waiting at a bus stop on Stanhope Parkway when a vehicle mounted the footpath, hit a pole and then hit the man, NSW Ambulance Chief Inspector Brian Parsell told AAP.

He was knocked approximately four metres from the point of impact and was immediately unconscious.

"It was a very distressing scene because the gentleman's wife was also on scene when this incident happened," Chief Inspector Parsell said.

He sustained head injuries and multiple upper limb fractures.

The man was placed into an induced coma and taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition.

The sole occupant, a female driver estimated to be in her 40s, was taken to Blacktown Hospital for mandatory blood and alcohol testing.
