Gavrilova knocked out of Miami Open
Australian Daria Gavrilova has crashed out of the Miami Open with a 6-1 6-4 opening-round loss to Slovakian Vikotoria Kuzmova.
The 48th-seed took nearly an hour and 40 minutes to dispatch Gavrilova, who won just 45 per cent of her first-serve points.
On the centre court, three-time Miami Open champion Venus Williams eased past Slovenian qualifier Dalila Jakupovic 7-5 6-3.
Lagging 5-4 in the first set, Williams surged into gear, breaking her opponent three times to claim victory in one hour and 18 minutes.
The 38-year-old was impressed by her younger opponent, who was playing in her first WTA premier event.
"She really plays the angles well and is definitely a real competitor," Williams said.
"I was just trying to get a feel for what her shot selection is like."
Another tennis sibling was less fortunate, with Mari Osaka - older sister of world No.1 Naomi - falling 6-2 6-4 to American wildcard Whitney Osuigwe.
New Indian Wells champion Bianca Andreescu battled against Irina-Camelia Begu in their second meeting this month, losing the first set before clawing her way back to triumph 4-6 7-6(2) 6-2.
Andreescu will next meet 32 seed Sofia Kenin, with Williams set to play 24 ranked Carla Suarez Navarro. Gavrilova's compatriot Ashleigh Barty, meanwhile, will take on Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska.
Earlier, Australian Ajla Tomljanovic also won through with a rain-interrupted 4-6 6-3 6-0 victory over German Anna-Lena Friedsam.
