Vic law to lock in major public holidays

Victorians will be guaranteed penalty rates on three major public holidays, with the government moving to enshrine the days in law.

"We are introducing legislation to reserve forever people's public holiday rights around Grand Final Friday, Easter Sunday and of course Christmas Day, when it falls on a Saturday or Sunday," Industrial Relations Minister Tim Pallas told reporters outside parliament.

Small Business Minister Adam Somyurek said it was about "preserving the status quo", while Opposition Leader Michael O'Brien said the Liberals would consult with community and business, before passing judgment.
