Wade keeps Tas in hunt of big Shield chase

Matthew Wade has kept alive Tasmania's hopes of reeling in a mammoth final-day target in their Sheffield Shield match against Western Australia.

The Tigers are 4-263 at tea at Bellerive Oval in Hobart and need another 191 runs from 38 overs in Friday's final session.

Wade, unbeaten on 92, grinded his way to lunch but upped the tempo afterwards in a match both sides need to win to stay in the hunt for a berth in the final.

The Tigers' skipper, this season's leading Shield run scorer, smacked two audacious leg-side sixes off WA's seamers and hit Hobart Hurricanes team mate D'Arcy Short to the boundary with several reverse sweeps.

Ben McDermott has proven a capable ally, with an unbeaten 55 in a 127-run stand.

If the Tigers reach the victory target of 454 it would be the fourth highest successful Shield run chase of all time.

Debutant Sean Wallis was the only Tigers batsman to fall in the middle session when he was caught at second slip off Joel Paris for 24.

Play started in the Warriors' favour, they removed Tasmanian openers Jordan Silk and Alex Doolan in the first two overs as the Tigers wobbled to 3-122 at lunch.
