Two boys drowned in a river in Qld

Jhulio Sariago, aged 3, and his big brother Barak, aged 5, slipped away from their home in Townsville on Monday and drowned in the Ross River.

HOW THE TRAGEDY UNFOLDED:

* Barak comes home from school on Monday, February 25, and plays with his Jhulio in their Cranbrook yard.

* During the afternoon, the brothers slip away.

* Security cameras at another Brett Street home capture the last images of the barefooted boys as they walk side by side at 5.30pm towards the river at the end of the street.

* The little boys didn't realise the favourite swimming hole had become so dangerous after record-breaking floods earlier this month.

* Witnesses saw the pair during the afternoon, and saw them jumping into the river, where neighbourhood children often play.

* Their mother, Leanne Eatts, raised the alarm around 6.30pm when the boys failed to come home.

* Police begin a search around 9.30pm, asking residents to check their yards.

* Two hours later police issue an "Amber Alert" asking for urgent public assistance, and hundreds answer the call.

* Dozens of people joined the SES, Rural Fire Services volunteers, firefighters and police to scour land and the waterways for any sign of the boys.

* More than 10 hours after they were reported missing, at 4.40am on February 26, their bodies were found.

*They were just 2 metres apart, submerged in a small cutaway on the Ross River, only 300 metres from their home.

* Their devastated family have been inundated with support.

* A memorial and smoking ceremony will be held on Sunday, March 3.

* A fundraiser has been launched to help the family return the bodies to Darwin for burial, since that is where they were originally from.
