Scott surges up Torrey Pines leaderboard

A stunning eagle has sent Adam Scott up the leaderboard at the US PGA Tour's Farmers Insurance Open midway through the second round at Torrey Pines.

Teeing off the 10th at Torrey Pines' North course, the former world No.1 picked up a birdie on his fifth hole before rifling a long-range second shot into the par-5 17th to tap-in distance.

Using his adopted new arm-lock putting grip, Scott converted the eagle before adding a birdie at the par-4 1st to move to six-under and five shots off the pace.

World No.1 Justin Rose currently tops the leaderboard at 11-under, one shot ahead of 2017 Torrey Pines champion Jon Rahm.

American Billy Horschel is a shot further back at nine-under.

Scott is currently the leading Australian, with defending champion Jason Day at five-under - one shot ahead of countrymen Marc Leishman and John Senden.

The 13-time PGA Tour winner Scott is also showing glimpses of his ball-striking best - hitting an impressive 10 of 11 greens while finding seven of nine fairways.

Sydney native Matt Jones has dropped two shots to fall to three-under, while Cameron Smith (one-under), Cameron Davis (even par) and Rod Pampling (three-over) round out the Australian contingent.

Meanwhile, Tiger Woods was climbing the leaderboard having reached four under before a double bogey six at the par-4 18th - his ninth - crippled his momentum.

Woods, an eight-time winner at Torrey Pines, including the 2008 US Open, hit seven of nine greens in regulation on the front side but is even for his round and two-under in total.
