Siddle sparks Vics fightback in Shield

Ex-Test opener Joe Burns has fallen agonisingly close of a century for Queensland as Test quick Peter Siddle helped spark a Victorian fightback in their Sheffield Shield clash at the Gabba.

But the stage is still set for the Bulls' dumped Test batsman Marnus Labuschagne to make a point to selectors on Wednesday.

After Scott Boland snared Burns for 96, Siddle (2-46) claimed two wickets in three balls as the Bulls went to lunch on day two at 5-195, holding an overall lead of 28 runs.

Labuschagne was not out 18 after watching the Bulls at one stage lose 3-31 in the morning session.

Australian Test squad member Siddle trapped Charlie Hemphrey in front for 34 before bowling allrounder Jack Wildermuth two balls later to have the hosts reeling.

Queensland resumed on Wednesday at 2-120 after routing the visitors for 167 with captain Peter Handscomb hitting a defiant 81 and Test opener Aaron Finch making 50 at No.3.

Boland (1-30) had Burns caught behind, ending his impressive 118-ball knock which featured seven fours and three sixes.

Test squad member Chris Tremain has 2-50.

Labuschagne will hope to make a statement at the Gabba after being overlooked for next week's first Test against India in Adelaide.

The South African-born right hander made a surprise Test debut in last month's series against Pakistan in the UAE but made 81 runs at 20.25.

Labuschagne has not fared much better for Queensland to date this Shield season, making just one score over 30 - 52 - in six innings.

Six of the 14 players in Australia's first Test squad are playing in the Gabba Shield clash.
