MP calls for single parent poverty review
Independent MP Andrew Wilkie has called for a review into how a $150 fortnightly reduction in government support has affected single-parent families.
Mr Wilkie told parliament on Monday some single parents were transferred to a different payment when their youngest child turned eight under the 2013 Labor government, resulting in about $150 less in their pockets each fortnight.
The six-month review would also look at the high instance of poverty in single-parent households, how welfare payments influence that, and how the government could better support single parents, he said.
