WA shoot-to-kill powers pass parliament

Western Australian police have stronger powers to shoot to kill during terror incidents under laws passed by the state's parliament.

Officers were previously allowed to use lethal force in an "imminent situation" but legislation passed by the upper house on Thursday means it can be used as a pre-emptive tactic, with legal protections for officers.

"I hope these laws never have to be used, but if the worst occurs, our police will be ready to respond," Premier Mark McGowan said in a statement.
