NSW ship fire 'difficult to access'

A Canadian ship ablaze on the NSW south coast is proving "difficult to access" as firefighters battle it for a third day.

Flames broke out in the cargo hold of the Iron Chieftain on Monday morning as crews were unloading dolomite at Port Kembla Harbour, with all escaping unharmed.

The blaze on the outer deck was put out later that day but a "deep-seated fire" continues to burn in the cargo hold which is "proving difficult to access", NSW Fire and Rescue says.

"While the fire has been contained, firefighters are working to extinguish the blaze completely."

Crews are battling the fire from the wharf and ship's deck, while tug boats are applying water to keep its fuel tanks cool.

NSW Fire and Rescue expects the operation, which has also involved police and ambulance officers, the state's Port Authority and NSW Environment Protection Authority, to continue "over the next few days".
