Qld makes final pitch for defence contract

A federal government defence contract would deliver hundreds of jobs and a $1 billion boost to the Queensland economy should bidder Rheinmetall win, state development minister Cameron Dick says.

The coalition government is expected to announce within weeks the winner of the $5 billion contract to build and service Australia's new armoured Land 400 vehicles.

If Rheinmetall is successful, about 100 vehicles are expected at the Townsville and Enoggera bases, with the contract predicted to generate 450 jobs and pump a billion dollars into the state's economy over the next decade.
