AFL stars support marriage equality

SYDNEY Aug 10 AAP - AFL stars from the Hawthorn Hawks and St Kilda Saints have come out in support for same-sex marriage in a series of new TV ads created by Australian Marriage Equality (AME).

Created for the latest AME campaign titled #WeCanDoThis, the videos show players and a number of celebrities, same-sex couples and community figures creating heart shapes with their hands.

Players featured include Saints' Josh Bruce and Sam Gilbert alongside team CEO Matt Finnis and coach Alan Richardson, as well as Hawks' Brendan Whitecross and Matt Spangher, with the latter stating "aren't we about a fair go? It's about respect."

The new campaign from AME is in response to anti-gay group Marriage Alliance's TV ads which aired on Foxtel, but were rejected by the Seven and Ten networks, claiming that legislating for same-sex marriage could result in the loss of religious freedom.

In June, AFL was one of many organisations which publicly joined the push for marriage equality with the likes of dual Brownlow medallist Adam Goodes also expressing his support.
