Brutus the hippo turns 50
Adelaide Zoo hippopotamus Brutus has celebrated his 50th birthday in style - hoeing into a three-tiered pumpkin cake.
Brutus is one of the oldest Nile hippos in Australia and has fathered 17 calves with his mate Susie since they arrived in Adelaide from Taronga Zoo in 1975.
The pair are now enjoying their golden years together but still enjoy a play wrestle in the pool after lunch.
Keeper Amy Nelson says Brutus is still very active despite turning 50 years old.
"Brutus is a very happy and healthy hippo," she said.
"He doesn't have any major health concerns and still has a very healthy appetite, especially for carrots."
Brutus and Susie have long been favourites with visitors to Adelaide Zoo and are the first animals people see when coming through the gates.
His birthday bash will include a special meet-the-keepers presentation on May 24 at his enclosure.
