Melbourne's severed finger mystery solved

The mystery of a severed finger has been solved after a man put his hand up as its owner.

A Melbourne driver made the shock discovery in the back of his ute on Monday.

What had appeared to be rust was instead a trail of blood, and the end of a pinky complete with fingernail.

The digit was finger-printed and DNA tested but didn't belong to anyone known to authorities.

Police called for help on Thursday, and a man in his 30s made contact.

"This incident appears to be the result of misadventure," a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.

Police would not elaborate, saying only that the man was in good spirits and no offence had occurred.

He apparently did not go to hospital, as a police check of emergency rooms found no one had recently arrived without a finger.
