Wagstaff to have public memorial service

Australians will get their opportunity to say goodbye to performer Stuart Wagstaff at a public memorial service.

The much-loved entertainer, who died on March 10 at the age of 90, spent more than 40 years gracing Australian screens and stages after immigrating from England in 1958.

Wagstaff was a regular panellist on Celebrity Squares and Blankety Blanks.

His public memorial service will be held in Sydney at the Theatre Royal on March 31, from 1.30pm (AEDT).

Wagstaff arranged to donate his body to the Anatomy Department of the University of Sydney.

In the formal memorial notice released on Friday, written by Wagstaff prior to his death, he joked that he'd "finally got to uni".

"Just to let you know that I have shuffled off this mortal coil and I'd like to thank everyone who has shared with me all the ups and downs of these fascinating 90 years," he wrote.

"There won't be a funeral as I have donated my tired old body."

Wagstaff also requested that there be a bucket collection at his memorial service to support the Actors Benevolent Fund.

He actively supported many charities and was created a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 1998 in recognition of his service to the community.
