Double Ds take largest Block risk
Darren and Deanne have effectively forfeited living/room week in what The Block host Scott Cam describes as the biggest gamble in the show's history.
The couple from Melbourne decided to swap their kitchen and dining room so they will have enough space to fit a double fridge and more than one oven in their kitchen.
But the floorplan flip means their design breaches building regulations - specifically that two thirds of a living area ceiling must be at least 2.4 metres high.
Darren and Deanne haven't revealed exactly what they plan to do but one option canvassed on the show is to pursue an exemption.
If the situation remains as it stands they won't be able to put their apartment to auction in breach of building regulations.
They have decided to present their area with an unfinished ceiling, almost guaranteeing they have no chance of winning living/dining room week.
"We're pretty much forfeiting this week because the way the ceiling was going to get built all around those pipes just would have looked horrendous," Darren said.
Cam said Deanne and Darren's decision was a high risk move.
"I reckon you have taken the biggest punt in Block history because if it comes off it will be a game changer, but if it doesn't come off you are in all sorts," he said.
Deanne said they were confident they had made the right call and were determined to avoid a result similar to The Block Glasshouse, when they made just $10,000 for ten weeks of work compared with some of the other teams who pocketed hundreds-of-thousands of dollars.
"We want to try and sell this one and we want to actually have something to show for it and all of our hard work," she said.
"We are just not doing all of this hard work all over again to have another outcome like we did last time."
Ayden and Jess' ceiling was also a problem but they changed it to meet the guidelines.
