Third SA road death in 24 hours

The death of a teenager near Port Lincoln on South Australia's Yorke Peninsula has taken the state's Christmas road toll to seven.

The 13-year-old from Aldinga Beach died at the scene after the sedan he was travelling in collided with a van just before midday on Tuesday.

Police say the sedan's female driver has been airlifted to hospital in a serious condition.

An 11-month-old girl and a six-year-old girl were also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, as were the driver of the van and his two passengers.

Earlier on Tuesday, a two-year-old boy from Ballarat died in hospital after the four-wheel drive he was in veered off the road and crashed into an embankment at Clay Wells.

The 24-year-old driver and her 40-year-old female passenger sustained minor injuries.

In a separate accident, a man died when he was struck in a hit-and-run near a service station at Woodville North just after 1am on Tuesday.

Police say the man was involved in an attempted aggravated robbery a short time before the crash.

The man was allegedly armed with a metal pole when he demanded cash from two teenage girls, who ran to safety and were not injured.

Seven people have now died in SA during the Christmas/New Year holiday road toll period.

* The national road toll period runs from 0001 December 23, 2014 until 2359 January 3, 2015, local times, in line with the Australia New Zealand Policing Advisory Board.
