Apes continues to reign over box office

Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel's Sex Tape wasn't enough to sway Australian audiences from continuing to watch Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which has claimed the top spot at the local box office for a second week in a row.

The sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes came in at no. 1 with $3.514 million while new comedy Sex Tape debuted in second place with $2.460 million, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.

Another sequel, Transformers: Age of Extinction held steady in third spot, as did Channing Tatum/Jonah Hill comedy 22 Jump Street in fifth and Clint Eastwood's Jersey Boys in sixth.

Animated flicks were in the downslide, with How To Train Your Dragon 2 slipping two spots to fourth, Rio 2 falling three rungs on the ladder to no. 7 and Tinker Bell & The Pirate Fairy dropping one place to eighth.

Black comedy/drama Calvary, from The Guard writer/director John Michael McDonagh, remained in ninth place again this week, while The Lunchbox climbed two places no. 10.
