Debut performance for Taronga koala joey
Just in time for the winter school holidays, Taronga Zoo's first koala joey of the season is eager to show off.
Visitors to the zoo on Wednesday were delighted to see the latest young koala, named Bai'yali, frolicking with her mother and tentatively exploring the world outside her mother's pouch.
Her name, Bai-yali, is the D'harawal Aboriginal word for "stringybark", a eucalyptus species favoured by koalas.
The seven-month-old female is the first of three joeys expected from the zoo's breeding program this season.
Koala keeper Laura Jones said both mother and daughter are happy and thriving in the zoo's koala enclosure, where they are attracting many admirers.
