Explosive news from Defence Force

After speculation ran wild over loud booms heard in Auckland, the Defence Force has come out with explosive news: it was us.

Residents in west and north Auckland felt their houses shake and heard loud bangs on Wednesday afternoon - but no one could explain what caused the noise.

Theories explaining the mystery bangs ranged from meteorites to a previously undiscovered volcano.

But on Thursday, the Defence Force confirmed it was likely to be the source of the explosions.

The RNZAF's No.5 Squadron had been conducting supervised explosive training for the P3K Orion in the Kaipara Bomb Range at the time.

The sound wouldn't usually travel that far, but a westerly wind and low cloud cover amplified the sound, the Defence Force said.

The explosion trials are set to continue on Thursday and the start of next week.
