Fault in Our Stars tops Aussie box office
The Fault in Our Stars has edged out Tom Cruise's new sci-fi flick Edge of Tomorrow to take the top spot on the Australian box office over the weekend.
Adapted from John Green's best-selling novel, The Fault in Our Stars features Divergent's Shailene Woodley as Hazel, a 16-year-old cancer patient who falls for Angus (Ansel Elgort), a boy she meets at her support group.
It debuted into No.1 with $3.776 million, beating out Cruise and Emily Blunt's Edge of Tomorrow, which took $3.023 million, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.
Disney's Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie, continued to weave its magic, snatching up third place, while X-Men: Days of Future Past fell from first spot into no. 4.
Just based on preview screenings another new entry, How To Train Your Dragon 2 nabbed fifth spot ahead of its official opening this Thursday.
Comedies were on the downslide, with A Million Ways to Die in the West dropping three places to sixth and Bad Neighbours down two spots to seventh.
The critically savaged Grace of Monaco, starring Nicole Kidman, debuted at no. 8.
