Transferred cheetah dies at zoo

A five-year-old cheetah has died hours after arriving at Wellington Zoo.

Shomari, and his twin brother Cango, arrived in the capital from Christchurch's Orana Wildlife Park on Wednesday afternoon but died that night, zoo staff said.

A statement said that both zoo teams were devastated by the death and they were awaiting results from a post mortem to confirm the cause of death.

Shomari was unconscious when he arrived at the zoo.

Cango was doing well, the statement for both zoos said.

Both cheetahs were hand-reared at Orana Park and were due to join Wellington Zoo's sole cheetah Charlie, but would housed be in a separate enclosure.

The zoo had conducted a Trade Me auction for someone to be the first to meet the cats which included meeting them at the airport with zoo keepers.
