Murderer looked at for Vic cold cases

Melbourne woman Sarah MacDiarmid's parents just want to know where she is.

Their hopes of finding out, 24 years after their daughter disappeared, may rest with a four-time murderer.

Bandali Michael Debs, who is serving four life sentences for killing two police officers and two women, is considered a possible suspect in a number of cold case murders.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Ken Lay said Debs was one of the worst criminals in Victoria.

"There are murders going back many, many, many years in this state, which some of my people would look at and think `this fits the Debs profile'," Mr Lay told Fairfax Radio on Tuesday.

Debs, 60, is being investigated over Ms MacDiarmid's disappearance from a train station near her Frankston home in 1990, the Herald Sun reported.

Mr Lay could not comment on the MacDiarmid case, but said there were police officers with "significant interest" in Debs.

"We will continue to look at a whole host of issues around this man and I suspect work around him will continue for many years to come."

Ms MacDiarmid, 23, was last seen walking through the car park of Kananook train station on the night of July 11, 1990.

Her parents reported her missing the next day.

Her father Peter MacDiarmid says they're closely following the latest developments.

"We'd really like to find out what happened to Sarah so we're watching this very very closely," he told reporters.

Her mother Sheila MacDiarmid wants closure.

"I would really like to just know where she is.

"It really would be wonderful for us, especially as we're getting older and more desperate."

Police say they're continuing to investigate Ms MacDiarmid's disappearance and are pursuing active lines of inquiry.

"Sarah has never been located. The case remains unsolved and a $1 million reward for information still exists," a police spokeswoman said.

She said detectives had spoken to a number of persons of interest throughout the investigation and it was not appropriate to comment on individuals.

Debs was convicted of murdering Sergeant Gary Silk and Senior Constable Rod Miller in Melbourne in 1998.

He was also convicted of murdering 18-year-old Kristy Harty in Upper Beaconsfield, southeast of Melbourne, in 1997 and 34-year-old Donna Anne Hicks in western Sydney in 1995.
