MasterChef sweetheart Doyle eliminated
Soggy fish skin has sunk the dreams of MasterChef resident sweetheart, Nick Doyle.
Doyle was eliminated from the Network Ten reality cooking show on Monday after facing off against model Sarah and bartender Sean in an elimination challenge.
The contestants tackled the dish Rivers and Lakes set by Lake House executive chef Alla Wolf Tasker, which features smoked eel, cured trout and cod, jelly fish consume, yabbies and fish crackling.
The Newcastle law student had never filleted a fish before and pinned his MasterChef hopes on his dessert skills.
"There is fish and fish and fish and fish and none of that is my forte - I'm in trouble," Doyle said.
After a stressful cook, he worked his charm in the tasting room with impeccable manners and a note from his Nanna, Penny.
"Life should be an adventure to be savoured from beginning to end," Doyle said, reading the note stuffed in his pocket for safe keeping.
"To win it sitting on the sidelines won't do."
Wolf Tasker gushed that Doyle was a lovely boy but we all know in the MasterChef kitchen niceness doesn't cover mistakes like limp fish crackling.
Sarah sailed through the challenge with her trademark calm demeanour, nailing her consume jelly but adding too much lemon to her watercress puree.
Sean, who was far more frantic in the kitchen, cured his fish well but his consume was cloudy.
Doyle said he knew he was a goner when he saw a fish dish under the cloche.
"I knew seafood would be my undoing," he said.
"I feel devastated, I don't want to go home."
He has started a blog and his own catering business.
A contestant will win the chance to fight for an immunity pin against 2013 The Age Good Food Guide Awards Young Chef of the Year, Oliver Gould, when MasterChef returns to Ten at 7.30pm on Tuesday.
