RMA changes 'parked up': Key

The government has "parked up" its reforms of the Resource Management Act, Prime Minister John Key says.

The government was hoping to make a raft of changes to the RMA to make property and infrastructure development easier and quicker.

However, both the Maori Party and United Future withdrew their support for the proposed amendments last year, citing concerns that environmental protection measures in the legislation would be diminished.

Mr Key told reporters on Monday it's unlikely the bill to make the changes will be introduced before the election.

"I think we'll campaign on what we want to do and see what the make-up looks like, whether we're the government after the election," he said.

The government's attempts to reform the RMA attracted criticism from environmental groups and the act's architect, Sir Geoffrey Palmer.
