Man charged with murder after fatal hit-and-run

A man has been charged with murder weeks after he was allegedly involved in a fatal hit-and-run in Victoria's central Gippsland region.

A 36-year-old man was on a street at Maffra, north of Sale, about 3.30am on February 5 when he was hit by an allegedly stolen Kia.

He later died in a Melbourne hospital.

The driver fled the scene in the stolen car, which was found abandoned hours later on a nearby street.

Police appealed for the public's help to find a 24-year-old man with no fixed address on Tuesday.

He handed himself in to a police station on Wednesday and was charged with murder, three counts of theft of a motor vehicle and two counts of theft.

He will appear at Latrobe Valley Magistrates Court on Thursday.
