SA eases some retail trading hours

Laws to relax Sunday retail trading hours have been passed by South Australia's parliament, allowing shops to open earlier.

Doors can open from 9am under the new provisions, instead of the current 11am.

The changes also permit shops across metropolitan Adelaide to trade on Boxing Day instead of just those in the CBD.

"These new shop trading laws strike the right balance for workers, large and small business owners, and shoppers," Premier Peter Malinauskas said.

The new arrangements are likely to come into effect next month, in time for the busy Christmas period.

The Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees' Association welcomed the changes and said they should end the debate over retail trading hours.

"For too many years, the working lives of retail workers have been part of public debate and commentary in this state," the union's secretary Josh Peak said.

"The passing of this bill is an opportunity for South Australians to move past this issue.

"From supermarket workers and small businesses to the community more broadly, this bill strikes the right balance for all South Australians."

Opposition Leader David Speirs said Labor's legislation was a missed opportunity to offer greater flexibility around shopping on public holidays.

SA's previous Liberal government tried to completely deregulate trading hours, but couldn't get its legislation through the parliament.
