Victorian tip told to stop accepting waste
A Victorian landfill operator has been ordered to stop accepting waste until odour issues at its Cranbourne site are properly managed.
The Environment Protection Authority issued the prohibition notice to Stevensons Brothers Industries after an inspection on Monday morning.
The landfill site came to the attention of the environmental watchdog after more than 1000 odour complaints were sent in from members of the community.
The notice will stop any further waste being accepted at the landfill site and requires SBI to hire an environmental manager, EPA chief executive Lee Miezis says.
"There has been intense activity at the SBI site under EPA's direction but the community continues to be affected by odour," Mr Miezis said.
A number of other EPA notices have already been handed to the operator, including one that requires odours from the site to be fixed by August 25.
If the operator does not comply with the notice requirements, they could have their licence suspended or be fined up to $396,000.
The EPA would continue to inspect and investigate the Cranbourne site, Mr Miezis said.
AAP has contacted SBI for comment.
