Big Trouble In Little China
Mixing the clichéd genres of kung fu and Fu Manchu (and even adding a few Charlie Chan-type types) within a Hollywood film almost, but not quite, works.
John Carpenter is more than capable of making good movies, but something gets lost in this potboiler about trucker Kurt Russell getting involved in swords and sorcery in Chinatown. The story makes no sense, but to begin with Carpenter makes the film such a ride you don't care.
Eventually the plot becomes so entangled your attention starts to wander and you end up admiring the lovely light fittings during a fight scene in the throne room. And some gorgeous materials were used on those plump cushions, too...
