The Craft
Some fairly entertaining hokum featuring Robin Tunney as Sarah, the lonely new girl at school who joins up with three other outsiders (Fairuza Balk, Rachel True and a pre-Scream Neve Campbell) and dabbles in a bit of witchery.
It all seems so natural - even their nickname at school is the Bitches Of Eastwick.
The film starts by trying to address teen issues, such as alienation, but soon wanders into the Land Of Formula. Which is a shame, because director and co-writer Andrew Fleming had his hands on a nice little concept but proceeded to let it slip through his fingers.
Satire is wasted and all that is left is a fairly standard teen flick, accompanied by the prerequisite rock soundtrack.
It strives for the brilliance of, say, Heathers, but doesn't have the guts to go all the way. The actresses all do the best they can with what they've got, but it is Balk who shines through as the girl whose absolute powers go to her head.
Fun, in a no-brainer way.
