Tin Cup
Anyone who likes a sports movie that's nice and, above all, quiet should warm to this golfing romance.
It's pitched on the usual fairway: a has-been champion (Kevin Costner) is awakened from his mid-life crisis by the appearance of a beautiful woman (Rene Russo) who comes for lessons. But then he finds she's already the fiancée of the reigning slimeball supremo of the greens (Don Johnson). Can he hole in one in both love and play?
The US Open is featured as the pitch where the two men, and a few other celebrities, fight it out. Cheech Marin plays the caddie who gives aspirational advice.
It's one of those redemptive plots that Hollywood loves, though the ending is more unusual than the story might lead you to expect.
