Analyze This
Just after The Sopranos hit the high notes in the TV ratings, there was this amusingly sardonic black comedy about a Mafioso (Robert De Niro) who feels he's losing his grip and consults an analyst.
The good doctor (Billy Crystal) is more than a little alarmed to have to deal with a man whose view of the sanctity of human life is so unprofessional, but gradually he becomes involved in his client's world.
Psychoanalysis often reveals a transference between analyst and patient, and it takes the form in this movie of Crystal taking over De Niro's job for the big showdown with the rest of the Mob.
The wit has genuine bite and there's more than a hint that quite a few of the talents involved in the film are drawing on their own prone experiences on the analyst's couch.
