Croupier
by CHRISTOPHER TOOKEY, Daily Mail
Croupier is an intriguing character study of a cold young man (superbly played by Clive Owen), a croupier and would-be novelist, callously enjoying the misfortune of others and seeking to avoid emotional commitment even with his live-in lover (Gina McKee).
Director Mike Hodges' stylish moral parable about the Nineties fetish with being 'cool' had a limited release in Britain in 1997 but has deservedly built up a reputation in the US.
Hodges is a terrific stylist, one of the few Brits whose most hard-edged work can stand comparison with Scorsese's.
Paul Mayersberg's script degenerates towards the end into a substandard thriller with an unhappy romantic ending that is arbitrary and perfunctory.
The central conspiracy is incomprehensible, and the final twist springs from nowhere and confuses rather than illuminates.
