Ah, the modern male, eh? All he seems to want to do is behave as though he's in a colour-saturated indie video, consort with ladies with their tops off and drink lager.

If he's not careful, he could end up (gasp) paying for sex, taking class-A drugs and generally behaving like your average Victorian gent.

Only in this moralistic piece, the next stage is raping and pillaging, no doubt followed by barbecuing children and incurring the wrath of Jehovah.

The premise of this hysterical but watchable two-part drama (concluding tomorrow) is that your average bloke is at a loss on how to assert his masculinity, so he might accidentally end up raping someone. It doesn't help that us birds are so demanding - constantly criticising their sexual techniques (as with Mac, played by Marc Warren, who not only shags like Ian Curtis danced, but has a low sperm count to boot) and career prospects.

Enter one bad apple - Jason (Steve Moyer) who has Bad Apple written all over him, probably even in the Occupation section of his passport - a misanthropic, repressed homosexual, followed by several semi-naked lap dancers and prostitutes stage left.

What ordinary, mortal male in his mid-thirties, alone in the 21st century, will be able to resist? Probably anyone not answering to the name of Priapus.

Meanwhile, Ch4 might want to start thinking about updating its drama style, or it's going to become as trademark as the Seventies BBC look.
