Eyes Wide Shut
Stanley Kubrick's last film is still dividing the critics. An updated version of an early 20th-century novella by Arthur Schnitzler, it relocates from Vienna to New York the story of a married couple who come apart over one end-of-year week.
Doubt is sown between them when the husband takes it for granted that the wife would never be unfaithful to him, and she subsequently disproves this, or seems to.
The film has gained an unexpected retrospective curiosity since the marriage of its stars, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, has collapsed in recent months.
The orgy sequence received a drubbing from critics - but the real heart of the film lies in Cruise's night-time journey through a city that offers him sexual opportunities, followed by his return the next day to find that death, or its omens, have now replaced them.
View it as a puzzle-picture about the links between love and death, and it begins to make sense.
