In A Green Shade
Tonight, Radio 3 presents a strikingly impressive and timely series of interlinked programmes which examine the future of Britain's countryside.
Hosted by cultural historian Professor Patrick Wright, this special evening includes historical features, debates about current agricultural, environmental, political and social issues, and new commissioned writing on the changing face of rural Britain.
In brief, Radio 3 is attempting to put a highly topical issue into its broadest cultural and historical context, and is to be warmly congratulated for doing so.
It is not the first time that the station has given an entire night's schedule to an in-depth discussion of an important issue, but tonight's effort clearly deserves the widest possible audience.
More details are available on the website at www.bbc.co.uk/radio3 - where listeners are also invited to comment on the issues raised.
